Gambling Threat on US Markets: Lifting Day-Trading Restrictions Triggers Record Trading Volumes

16:30 - 23.10.2026

October 23, Fineko/abc.az. Retail trading volumes across US equity and options markets have surged to record levels following regulatory changes that eased day-trading restrictions for individual investors.

The rally comes after regulators eliminated the long-standing "Pattern Day Trader" (PDT) rule, which previously barred margin accounts with under $25,000 in equity from executing more than three intraday trades within five business days.

Major retail brokerages, including Robinhood Markets and Webull Corp, recorded 30% to over 70% spikes in average daily trading volumes following the rule change. However, investor advocates warn that removing trading limits blurs the line between disciplined long-term investing and high-risk speculative gambling.
