October 19, Fineko/abc.az. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) plans to resume purchases of natural gas from Russian company Gazprom, SOCAR Vice President Elshad Nasirov said at the Russian Energy Week forum in Moscow.
According to Nasirov, cooperation with Gazprom is a unique example of cooperation in the gas industry: SOCAR first purchased Russian gas, then supplied gas to the Russian company itself, and now intends to act as a buyer again.
"We can proudly say that our cooperation with such a giant as Gazprom is a very good example. SOCAR is probably the only company in the world that first bought gas from Gazprom, then supplied gas to Gazprom, and now wants to buy it again," Nasirov said.
He stressed that the purchase and sale of gas, as well as seasonal swap transactions, are common practices in the work of companies.
At that, the specific volumes and dates of possible deliveries have not yet been determined. Answering a question from journalists about the estimated volume of purchases, Nasirov said that there are no specific plans at the moment.
Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller also confirmed that the Russian company is aware of the Azerbaijani side's intention to resume gas purchases.
"Yes, we know," Miller told journalists at the Russian Energy Week forum.
Cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan in the gas sector has been going on for several decades. During this time, countries have acted as both buyers and suppliers of natural gas. Seasonal gas swaps remain one of the mechanisms of interaction.
