Critical Warning from UN: 1.2 Billion People Trapped in Dire Poverty

15:32 - 14.10.2026

October 14, Fineko/abc.az. According to the 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) published by UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), the number of people living in acute multidimensional poverty has reached 1.2 billion.

This marks an increase of 51.5 million people, registering the first rise in global poverty figures since the index was launched in 2010.

Children account for over half of the impoverished population (617 million), while 83% of all multidimensionally poor live in rural areas. While rapid population growth and economic reversals in several countries fueled the increase, nations such as Egypt, Nepal, and Tajikistan managed to significantly reduce both their poverty rates and total poor population.
